| CASE STUDIES: THE
IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING THE DRILL. |
 |
| With proactive petitions and creative techniques, Letterle
saved time, money and headaches for a client in Cranberry, Pennsylvania. |
 |
| When the owner of a retail gas station and convenience
store in Cranberry sold his property in 1998, he was in for a little
surprise -- petroleum impacted soil and groundwater were discovered
beneath the site. Letterle was called in to help. |
 |
| Immediately, on behalf of our client, we applied for financial liability
coverage under the Pennsylvania Underground Storage Tank Indemnification
Fund (PA USTIF). Although approved, the claim was pro-rated to only
85% coverage. Undaunted, we re-petitioned the PA USTIF. Based on information
which we provided, the pro-ration was removed – and our client
enjoyed substantial savings. |
 |
| After the site was fully characterized, we were ready to remediate.
There was only one problem. The new property owner had already installed
new underground storage tanks and redeveloped the site. Naturally,
he was concerned about disruption of his business and damage to his
property. |
 |
 |
 |
| Here again, our experience paid off. Rather than use traditional trenching
methods with a backhoe, we installed subsurface piping using a much
less disruptive technique of horizontal drilling. |
 |
| But we weren’t out of the water yet. When our request to discharge
treated groundwater to a local sanitary authority was denied, we applied
to the EPA for an underground injection permit. This allowed us to
discharge the water back into the subsurface – and to keep the
project moving forward. |
|
|
 |
| Meanwhile, our negotiations with the sanitary authority continued.
And after six months, we received the permit we needed. Now the remediation
system went forward at a much faster pace, shortening the overall
cleanup program. |
 |
| Other results include one calm owner and one happy client. |
